I.P.S.

Instrument Protection Services

THE IDEA

IPS aims to bring the art of playing, making, repairing instruments, and bringing an understanding of music cultures from around the world to the San Francisco Bay Area by creating a public instrument library. Our goal is to provide a creative, fun, and safe space for people of all ages to come to check out instruments from all over the world much like you would a book from a community library. Patrons can then take advantage of our network of teachers and luthiers to learn, practice, and perform with the instruments of their choice. Patrons also have the opportunity to learn the intricacies of instrument repair and fabricaton from all cultures and countries. At the same time, it is a place where everyone in the world can come to stay, share, and grow together through music.

IPS aims to bring the art of playing, making, repairing instruments, and bringing an understanding of music cultures from around the world to the San Francisco Bay Area by creating a public instrument library.

The Initial Plan:

-Get a large warehouse, retired hotel, or other large brick and mortar space.

-Remodel it to include: the instrument library with instruments, accessories, and musical reference materal; practice/lesson rooms - small for private practice or lessons, larger rooms for group practice, rehearsal or lessons; performance stage and dance hall; a music shop with rent to own instruments and musical accessories and reference materials; hotel guest rooms for travelling musicians/music enthusiasts, each with a different cultural music theme from all corners of the world.

-The Library: Will work much like a book based or tool lending community library. Upon entering IPS, patrons will be directed to the music rooms containing the instruments that suit their particular interests. Each room will have a listening station to give patrons an idea as to what each country's traditional music is like. Once the patron chooses an instrument, they can check it out for a period of up to two weeks, and can be renewed twice before the instrument must be returned to IPS.

-To obtain a free IPS Library card, patrons must provide proof of residence from within the county where IPS is located. For out of county residents, IPS Library cards can be obtained through a monthly membership commitment through automatice payment until such time as IPS expands to their county. Late fees for late returns will be charged to the patron or member's account and must be paid before being allowed to check out another item from the library.

-Private or group lessons: Teachers will be paid commisson to teach private or group lessons. Lessons will be available for all different types of music from beginner to advanced with some progressive classes leading up to a performance at the end of the class sequence. Anyone can sign up for lessons for a small tuition fee, you don't have to be a patron.

-Performances: Anyone can perform, as long as they sign up on the calendar in advance. A portion of the cover charge for these performances will go back into IPS.

Practice/Rehearsal Rooms: Available on a first come/first served basis for free.

-Tuitions, cover charges, hotel rates, library late fees, purchases and rentals from the music store will all go back into the operations of IPS.
